Bipartisan Bill Targets AI Fraud and Deepfakes of Federal Officials
Lawmakers Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and Neal Dunn (R-Fla.) have introduced the "AI Fraud Deterrence Act," a bipartisan effort to combat the rising misuse of artificial intelligence in scams. The legislation aims to modernize U.S. fraud laws to address AI-generated deepfakes that impersonate federal officials or deceive the public.
The bill proposes stricter penalties for AI-assisted fraud and explicitly criminalizes the use of AI to impersonate government figures. "As AI technology advances at a rapid pace, our laws must keep up," Dunn stated, emphasizing the need to protect public trust in digital communications.
Representative Lieu echoed this sentiment, noting widespread public support for "sensible guardrails" on AI development. The legislation reflects growing concerns about the potential for AI to undermine institutional credibility and manipulate democratic processes.
